Finding The Best Flat Screen TVs
We are spoilt for choice with TV technology today, with every new generation of television they become larger, slimmer and provide better picture quality and sound. So how do you choose the right make and model for you.
Undoubtedly the feature we look for first is the screen size and picture quality, in most electrical stores it is easy to compare because all the TVs are lined up together. At this point most people are not concerned about the underlying technology.
There are several types of technology that drive screen displays and these are CRT, Rear projection and projection, Plasma, LCD and OLED. CRT is now defunct and old technology and in general is no longer available.
Rear projection and projector technology is new although rear projector TVs although large do not have great picture quality. They are also bulky and when the bulb inside the rear projector goes it is costly to replace.
Projectors are smaller but very niche, they allow you to project the television picture onto a wall or white screen. The technology for these is getting better all the time but they are not ideal for most families.
The popular types of TV today are Plasma, LCD and the newer OLED. Plasma displays tend to be larger but they do get very hot and use a lot of electricity. This leaves us with the LCD and OLED technology, LCD is presently the most popular covering a variety of screen sizes. OLED is the latest technology but is not widely available, these OLED TVs can be as thin as 3mm. The picture quality is also the best of any.
Getting the best LCD TV means looking for the features that make these televisions better quality. Generally the larger the screen size the more expensive it is going to be, whilst many people go for large screens you should only get a TV the size needed for your room. A screen too large for your room will be difficult to watch as you will be sitting too close to the screen.
Whilst screen sizes range from about 14 inches to more than 50 inches your screen size will appear to be bigger or smaller depending on whether you go for a wide screen or standard screen. Standard screens have a ratio of 4:3, this makes them almost square looking. Widescreen TVs have a screen ratio of 16:9 which makes them wider giving a rectangular screen.
A factor with LCD TVs is the contract ratio, this is the screens ability to display both light and dark on the same screen. Basically you will get a better picture if the screen can display really dark black and really bright at the same time. This is measured as a ration like screen ratio. The higher the ratio the better the screen, ratios can go up to 10,000:1 and beyond as the technology gets better.
