Residential Solar Power: Make Your Own

Home users are already accustomed to the notion of residential solar power. Recent advances have made it possible to make this a 24-hour option by using storage devices. The big advantage that this brings is that solar generated electricity then becomes available even when the sun is not shining.

Because the sun is a clean, zero cost and renewable source of energy, residential solar power is of considerable interest. In addition, it can now not only save users money, but also make them money by allowing them to sell back surplus energy to the power grid. To understand how this can work, it is useful to think of how a car`s headlights work. They can be switched on at any time, even if the car engine is not running and the alternator is not generating electricity.

How solar power can be used for residential applications

Solar power systems can be integrated into construction in a way that is both pleasant visually and also cost effective. Advances in technology mean that many U.S. towns and cities are now taking a fresh look at the way the residential constructions should be done. This is also the case in many other parts of the world. The building integration market for solar power generation of this type is expanding rapidly by 30 percent to 35 percent each year. Solar power can therefore be used in two main ways. The first is a simple heat transfer system that can be used to heat swimming pools. The second allows for electricity to be generated immediately, using photovoltaic solar technology.

The phenomenon may be most obvious in isolated residential areas that are not connected to the power grid, but is also increasing significantly in the average U.S. city. Today more than 10,000 homes in the average U.S. city are powered exclusively by solar energy, and photovoltaic facilities are installed in more than 200,000 residential areas. This is in comparison to the last decade when such residential solar power usage was relatively rare in any large U.S. city.

The new financial benefits of using autonomous and pollution-free power are immediately reflected in the dramatic decrease in electricity bills. This in turn is motivating an increasing number of people to use solar electricity. When residences that are not connected to the power grid are considered, the advantages grow even bigger. The installation of a photovoltaic system on site amounts to some $15,000 to $20,000 per kilowatt. Compare this with the cost of installing power lines to the grid, which by comparison costs between $20,000 and $80,000 dollars per mile.

Using solar power systems can provide immense savings to homeowners. Families can economize as much as 85% of the utility bill on the cost of heating water electrically. This is the result of the lifestyle of many U.S. families where everyone takes at least one bath per day. Winter conditions may increase this even more, and in any case heating water is a daily activity. Over 13 billion dollars is estimated to be spent in the US on heating water alone. For a single family home, this is 25 per cent of the total energy that residents are using.

Other financial benefits include energy mortgages that are offered by lenders in over nine states for the benefits of homeowners using such systems. Homebuyers may also be awarded tax deductions on their income against the cost of the home mortgage in such cases. This is the case when such solar water heating systems are included in the financing for a new home. No wonder with these advantages that solar power is becoming such an attractive idea.

As many as 94% of Americans participating in a recent study on home mortgage were explicitly happy that they had invested in solar water systems. The total number of Americans participating in the survey was over 1,5 million.

With the right basic knowledge, solar energy systems are available at home to you as well. Understanding how to choose location, how to put the energy system in, using parts that can be acquired inexpensively will allow you to reap the benefits as long as you know how to complete the wiring and ensure that safety precautions are observed. This basic knowledge can therefore help you to benefit from the environmental and financial advantages discussed.
